Hiring and working safely

  • Keep chats on getlocal until you trust someone; don’t share bank details, ID documents or your home address early.
  • Agree the scope, price and timing in writing (a chat message counts) before work starts.
  • Never pay the full amount up front for a job or item you haven’t seen. Use traceable payment methods.
  • Check licences or insurance for regulated trades in your country.

Scam awareness

Common scams include fake job offers that ask you to pay for training or equipment, overpayment “refund” tricks, fake courier links for classifieds, and anyone who asks for gift cards or crypto. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Report scams to your national consumer or fraud agency.

Meeting in person

  • For classifieds, meet somewhere public and busy, in daylight if you can.
  • Tell a friend where you’re going and who with.
  • For home visits by a worker, have someone else around for the first job if possible.

Reporting and blocking

Every profile, chat and post has a Report and Block option in its ⋯ menu. Blocking hides you from each other straight away. Reports are confidential.

How moderation works

Reports go to a moderation queue reviewed by our team. We can remove content, remove media, suspend or ban accounts, and we keep an audit log of admin actions. Serious threats are referred to police. You can also report harmful content to your national online-safety regulator (for example eSafety in Australia or Ofcom in the UK).

18+ policy

getlocal is for adults only. Accounts we reasonably believe belong to someone under 18 are removed.

Privacy controls and your data

In Settings you can hide your active status, hide from suggestions, control message requests, turn personalisation off, and download or delete your data. We handle personal information under applicable privacy laws, including the GDPR/UK GDPR for European members; read our Privacy Policy and how we keep data secure.

Safety questions

What does “verified” mean on getlocal?

A badge only appears for checks that were actually completed: email confirmed, phone confirmed, or a photo verification reviewed by our team. Worker licence and ABN badges appear only after an admin has checked them. Verification lowers risk but never replaces your own judgement.

How do I report or block someone?

Open the ⋯ menu on any profile, chat or post and choose Report or Block. Blocking is immediate and the other person is not told. Reports go to our moderation queue.

Is getlocal 18+?

Yes. You must be 18 or older to join. We ask for your date of birth at sign-up and remove accounts we believe belong to minors.

Someone asked me for money. What should I do?

Stop replying, do not send money, gift cards or crypto, report the profile, and report it to your national consumer or fraud agency (listed in the Safety centre). If you have already paid, contact your bank straight away.
