Buying and selling locally: a classifieds safety guide

· 1 min read · getlocal team

Buying and selling second-hand locally saves money and keeps things out of landfill. A few simple habits keep it safe.

Common scams to recognise

  • Overpayment: a buyer "accidentally" sends too much and asks for a refund of the difference. The original payment later bounces.
  • Fake payment screenshots: always check your own bank or payment app, not a picture
  • Deposits for items you have not seen, especially rentals and vehicles
  • Couriers and agents: a buyer who cannot meet and wants to send a courier, or a seller who insists on shipping only
  • Moving off-platform fast: pressure to switch to another app or email straight away

Meeting in person

  • Meet somewhere public and busy, in daylight, or bring a friend
  • For large items at home, have someone with you and keep valuables out of sight
  • Inspect the item and test it before you pay

Paying and getting paid

  • Cash in person or an instant, traceable transfer once the item is in your hands
  • Never send gift cards, cryptocurrency or wire transfers to strangers
  • As a seller, wait until funds have actually cleared

Report it

Use the report button on any listing or message that looks wrong. Our team reviews reports, and you can also report scams to your national consumer or fraud agency (each getlocal country page lists one).
