Freelancing and side gigs: how to start, price and grow locally
· 1 min read · getlocal team
A side gig can be a few extra hours a week or the first step to running your own business. Either way, the basics are the same.
Pick something people nearby need
The best local gigs solve a frequent, practical problem: cleaning, gardening, pet care, tutoring, furniture assembly, small repairs, moving help. Look at the jobs people in your area post and at what is in demand.
Set a price you can stand behind
- Check what others nearby charge for similar work
- Work out your real hourly cost, including travel, materials and time spent quoting
- Offer a simple starting rate, then raise it as reviews come in
- Be clear about minimum charges and what is included
Register where your country requires it
Most countries expect you to declare self-employed income, and many require a business or tax registration once you trade regularly. Each getlocal country page lists the usual registration for that market. When in doubt, check your tax authority's website.
Build trust fast
- Verify your profile
- Add photos of real work (with the client's permission)
- Ask every happy client for a review
- Reply to enquiries quickly and politely, even when you have to say no
Keep it sustainable
Use getlocal's availability settings so you only get enquiries you can take, keep simple records of income and expenses, and do not be afraid to turn down work that is not a good fit.
