How to find local jobs near you (and stand out when you apply)

· 1 min read · getlocal team

Plenty of local work never reaches the big job boards. Cafés, shops, tradespeople and households often hire through word of mouth, or from whoever replies first and clearly. That is good news if you are nearby and organised.

Make yourself easy to find

  • A real profile photo and a clear headline, for example "Barista, weekends and evenings" or "Removals offsider with own van"
  • Your area and how far you will travel
  • Availability: employers filter on it
  • Skills and categories: pick the services you actually do so you appear in the right searches

Where to look

  1. Local job posts on getlocal, filtered by your area and category
  2. Shop windows and community boards, still common for hospitality and retail
  3. Your network: tell friends and neighbours what you are looking for
  4. Direct approaches: a short, polite message to a local business with your availability often works

Applying so you get a reply

  • Reply quickly, since many small employers hire the first good fit
  • Answer what the post asks and mention when you can start
  • Keep it short: three or four sentences beats a long cover letter for casual work
  • Follow up once after a few days if you hear nothing

Know your rights

Pay rates, contracts and right-to-work rules depend on your country. Check your government's official employment website for minimum pay and conditions, and be cautious of any "job" that asks you to pay a fee, buy equipment from them or receive money on someone else's behalf.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a CV for casual work?

Often not. A complete profile and a clear message are usually enough for casual and part-time roles.
